Aloud for iPhone

Something not working, or a reading that came out wrong? Write to supportlap478@gmail.com and you'll get a real answer from the person who wrote the app.

It helps to say which language you were reading, what the app showed you, and what you expected instead.

Things people ask

Why are some words grey?

Grey means the app could not make the word out — background noise, a quiet moment, a word swallowed by the one before it. Grey never counts against you. Only the orange words do, and those are the ones where it clearly heard a different word.

It marked a word wrong that I said correctly

That happens, and the app is built to make it rare: it only marks a word when it is confident, and it stays quiet otherwise. If it keeps happening on the same word, check which country is selected at the top — the app measures you against that variety of the language, and Spanish from Spain and Spanish from Mexico do not agree about every sound.

Why does it want to download something the first time?

Speech recognition needs a language model on the device, and your iPhone only ships with the ones for its own language. It downloads once, from Apple. After that the app works with no internet at all — you can check by turning on Airplane Mode.

The voice reading the passage sounds robotic

Every iPhone ships with the basic voices. Better ones are a free download from Apple, and no app can fetch them for you: open Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices, pick your language and choose a voice marked Enhanced or Premium. Then open ••• › Voice in Aloud and select it.

How much is free?

The first five readings have everything open. After that, reading passages and seeing what came out differently stays free forever, in all six languages. One payment keeps the coaching: the sound behind your misses, the practice list, the progress and the camera. There is no subscription.

I paid and it's asking me to pay again

Tap Restore purchase on the unlock screen. It's a one-time purchase tied to your Apple Account, so it follows you to a new phone.

Can I read my own book?

Yes. Turn on My own text in the ••• menu and paste anything, or choose Read a page with the camera and photograph the page in front of you.
